ABOUT THE ROLE

This is an entry-level research engineering role at a small, ambitious robotics startup in Munich. You'll apply state-of-the-art machine learning — perception, reinforcement learning, imitation learning, and sim-to-real transfer — directly to a real industrial robotic work cell. If you want to ship ML on actual factory hardware rather than in simulation alone, this role is for you.

The company builds fully flexible, intelligent robotic work cells designed to automate the hardest manual industrial tasks: surface finishing, welding, and coating. You'll be working at the frontier of applied robot learning, bridging cutting-edge research and real-world deployment.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Research and evaluate ML models for robot perception and task understanding
  • Apply computer vision and deep learning to multimodal sensor data (cameras, force/torque sensors, depth sensors)
  • Experiment with reinforcement learning and imitation learning for robot control
  • Integrate trained AI models into a ROS 2-based robotics stack
  • Design and run rigorous experiments, iterate quickly, and document findings
  • Bridge the gap between research prototypes and real-world factory deployment

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Required

  • BSc or MSc in Robotics, Computer Science, AI, or a closely related field
  • Strong Python skills and hands-on experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow
  • Practical exposure to computer vision and/or robot learning (thesis, internship, open-source, or research project)
  • Genuine interest in physical systems and real-world robotics — not purely software or NLP
  • Already eligible to work in Germany (visa sponsorship is not available)
  • Able to work on-site in Munich full-time

Nice to Have

  • Experience with sim-to-real transfer and simulators such as Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, or PyBullet
  • 3D perception skills — point clouds, depth estimation, or similar
  • Familiarity with ROS 2
  • Research publications or a thesis in a relevant area
  • 0–3 years of professional or research experience in robotics or ML

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Equity participation offered
  • Cash salary details to be discussed directly during the interview process

LOCATION

  • On-site only — Munich, Bavaria, Germany
  • Candidates must be based in Munich or willing to relocate
  • No remote or hybrid option; no visa sponsorship available
